Dr. Charles Stone Biography

Introduction

Dr. Charles Stone is a world renowned expert in proton exchange membrane fuel cell technology.  He began his career with Ballard Power Systems in 1990 as a research scientist after completing his PhD at the University of British Columbia, and two post-doctoral studies, one in Switzerland and one in Quebec. 

Dr. Stone took on ever more senior roles at Ballard, becoming Vice-President of Research & Development in 2002.  In this role, Dr. Stone had overall responsibility for driving fuel cell technology into products, in addition to executive responsibility for intellectual property.  Dr. Stone was a member of Ballard’s executive team from 2002, taking on the role as the executive most responsible for technology interface to strategic partners Daimler, Ford, and EBARA Research in Japan.  During his tenure at Ballard, Dr. Stone developed significant experience in establishing and managing key strategic supplier relationships.

Dr. Stone left Ballard in March 2007 to start up his own consulting firm, Eon Consultants Ltd., in the area of Clean Energy and has worked the governments, private and public companies and Venture Capitalists globally advising in areas of strategy, technology development and implementation, product portfolio management and strategic partnering and marketing.   Dr. Stone has a double MBA from UCLA and the National University of Singapore, graduating at the top of his class of other senior managers, directors and executives from global Fortune 500 companies.  Dr. Stone has publishing numerous scientific papers in internationally respected journals, in addition to being an inventor on 15 issued US patents.

Key Experiences

As COO of Cue Energy Plc, I led strategic business development, including interface with IP licensor, key potential investors, brokers and nominated advisors.  Developed and wrote business plan and offering prospectus with CEO for a potential AIM listing in London, UK.

Through EON Consultants, I have worked with various government and private organizations helping them with technology and product strategy, strategic partnering, product planning, product focus, customer development and investor relations.

Member of Ballard’s executive team from February 23, 2004 and company officer beginning January 17, 2005.  Key responsibilies were to develop, implement and ensure strategic alignment of technology development to product development.&

Development and implementation of overall R&D & IP strategy and budget for Ballard (>$16M/yr).

Chairperson and member (Feb 2004 – Mar 2007) of Ballard’s Technology Approval Committee; the committee had responsibility for technology piplining through to manufacturing.

Key interface to Ford and Daimler fuel cell research groups.  Significant experience in working with executives and senior managers at large global enterprises like Ford, Daimler, Ebara Corporation, DuPont, Johnson Matthey, and many others.

Build, maintain and mentor a high performance team (17 PhDs, 25 MSc, 30 BSc and ~20 technicians; 3 IP lawyers; 3 patent agents).

Work closely with VP Marketing & Business Development to develop supplier and customer relationships.

Steering Committee member for key materials technology development partnerships.
